I have often noticed that young people who have experienced an excellent upbringing, go off the rails as young adults and into later life and people who have experienced dreadful problems as children or have had a very poor upbringing turn out to be successful and constructive citizens.
Could it be that children who have to develop survival mechanisms at a very young age are fully trained in coping with life's inevitable vagaries once they reach adulthood.
